New Park in Brooklyn Becomes Third Largest in the Borough

New York hiking enthusiasts now have another park to explore as the Shirley Chisholm State Park opened on July 2. Located along the shores of Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn, the park boasts 407 acres of green space which makes it the largest state-operated park in the city and third-largest park behind Marine Park and Prospect Park, both of which are managed by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.

Prior to its July 2 opening, which was attended by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other politicians, the park was closed off to the public and served as a dumping site for the contaminated property. It was also a landfill from 1956 until 1983. The overhaul of the area, which will include hiking and biking trails, community gardens, and recreation centers, is made possible through a $20 million investment as part of Cuomo's Vital Brooklyn Initiative, which aims to install enough green spaces or recreation centers so that every Central Brooklyn resident has access to one within a 10-minute walk.
